Lab Shelter Mechanic Denver, CO The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) gathers data for determining thelocation, amount, availability, and quality of ground and surface waterthroughout the United States and its territories. About 75 to 80 percent ofthe water-quality samples used in this effort are analyzed by the NationalWater Quality Laboratory (NWQL). The NWQL determines organic and inorganicconstituents in samples of ground and surface water, river and lakesediment, aquatic plant and animal material, and in precipitation samples. We are seeking a Lab Shelter Mechanic to help support the efforts at theNWQL. Responsibilities: * Work with Lead Maintenance Mechanic in a variety of facilities effortsto ensure that the facility is properly maintained and is at all timessuitable for occupancy * Perform a variety of maintenance and repair functions on USGS ownedequipment and fixtures * Provide expertise and communicate in the development of statements of workand justifications for major repairs requiring a purchase order or contract * Review instrumental power requirements and make evaluations as to howinstallations should be performed and how electrical power should be routed toensure correct distribution * Perform installation and wiring for NWQL instrumentation, evaluatingcircuit capacity and arranges for additional power to meet NWQL requirementsas necessary * Assist with the setup, installation, and testing of new laboratoryequipment as needed * Perform major and minor electrical functions such as replacing switches,outlets, repair laboratory equipment and rerouting power to laboratorybenches and instruments * Evaluate available electrical power in order to ensure that there isadequate electricity to meet NWQL needs * Perform maintenance and repair on USGS owned equipment to includerefrigerators, freezers, chillers, etc. * Interact with USGS, GSA and facilities personnel to affect emergencyrepairs whenever required * Maintain and repair laboratory intake and exhaust systems completing suchtasks as replacing blower motors, belts, shaft and bearings and fume hoodrepairs * Perform minor installation, maintenance and repairs to NWQL ownedlaboratory-plumbing systems * Assist in the initiation of requisitions for supplies, material, andequipment needed to accomplish assigned tasks Qualifications: * HS diploma /Bachelor s desired * Must possess and shall maintain a journeyman electrician license issued bythe state of Colorado * Must have knowledge of various activities associated with repair andmaintenance of internal building operations which include but not limited toequipment repair and/or installation, plumbing and electrical applications * Ability to adhere to all safety, health and environmental processes andprocedures * Ability to lift and carry moderately heavy items weighing up to 100 pounds. * Also requires prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending,stooping, reaching and similar activities in and around the facility areas Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government securityinvestigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classifiedinformation.
