Job Summary

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is looking for a year-round intern to join our National Bioenergy Center in Golden, Colorado. NREL is the nation’s primary laboratory for research, development, and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies.

The team is looking for a successful candidate with a specialization in Bioenergy and Algae Biotechnology. The intern will assist in the cultivation of algae, the fractionation of algal biomass, as well as pretreatment, extraction, and conversion of algal biomass components to fuels and chemicals.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Help where needed with the analytical chemistry and biochemistry of samples

  • Keep notes and organize sample data

  • Support cultivation and physiological growth experiments in collaboration with researchers and technical staff

  • Stringently follow safety guidelines

  • Report findings to mentor and/or supervisor

  • Since the intern will assist with a range of different projects, a strong organization background is needed

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Willingness to perform routine tasks to support research staff


Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution.

Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation.

Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with algal cultivation methods and biofuel production processes

  • Ability to independently conduct laboratory experiments, as well as work as part of a larger research team

  • Experience with laboratory work
