Physical Demands: The work ranges from sedentary when completing duties in the office to frequent field work requiring a considerable amount of walking, riding, stooping, bending, and lifting.

Work Environment: Office work is performed in adequately lighted, heated, and air conditioned offices. Much of the time is spent in the field where exposure to extremes of heat and cold, rough terrain, insects, snakes, and other hazards are common. The employee will carefully adhere to all safety procedures to mitigate hazards encountered.

Duties

At the full performance level (GS-7), you will:

  • Performs range use supervision including conferral with permittes/lessees on general inquires, independent identification of range improvements, and prepares automated billing and other automated system input documents.
  • Plans and conducts pre-inventory mapping by preliminary delineation on aerial photography. Plans and conducts range inventory surveys and selects appropriate guidelines and techniques to use. Reviews data for technical accuracy and transfers it to forms for computer data analysis. Summarizes and evaluates data, and makes recommendations on specific areas for use by resource planners.
  • Conducts range studies, trains and monitors crews carrying out studies, and monitors range use.

Qualifications

To qualify for the GS-05 grade level,you must satisfy one of the requirements described below:

(1) EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-4 level. Examples of specialized experience may include conducting preliminary reconnaissance of range areas to select possible sites for re-seeding, fresh clearing, water spreading systems, etc.; or serving as an instrument person in laying out contour furrows, determining the contour line and staking out the line

(2) EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: Successful completion of a full four year (180 quarter or 120 semester hours) course of study leading to a bachelor’s degree (a) with a major forestry, range management, agriculture or a subject-matter field directly related to the position or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of the following courses: forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources, outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester hours in math is creditable

(3) COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position by combining specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education according to the following formula: (a) your total months of full time specialized experience as a percentage of a 12 month total; PLUS (b) your total number of qualifying undergraduate semester or quarter hours as a percentage of four years of undergraduate study leading to a bachelor's degree

To qualify for the GS-06 grade level,you must show one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level (GS-05). Examples: performing work in the conservation, regulation and use of public or Federally controlled lands for grazing; conducting range research activities; working in the operation of a livestock ranch or assisting in the management or preservation of lands comparable to the public range; OR work related to range/forest fire control, prevention or suppression

(2) EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: One year of progressively higher level graduate education directly related to the duties performed by Range Technician, such as courses in Range Management or Forestry.

(3) COMBINING EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position by combining specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Your graduate level education must provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the range technician duties as described in this announcement.

To qualify for the GS-07 grade level, you must satisfy one of the requirements described below:

(1) EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level (GS-06). Examples: In addition to the examples described above, performing procedural assignments in support of rangeland management programs or projects where methods and techniques were well-established, keeping records on the results of routine tests and sampling procedures for a rangeland management program and preparing reports using designated, well-established guidelines to compute, compile, and present data.

(2) EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: One year of progressively higher level graduate education directly related to the duties performed by Range Technician, such as courses in Range Management or Forestry.

(3) COMBINING EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position by combining specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Your graduate level education must provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the range technician duties as described in this announcement.
