Position summary

The Chief Medical Officer is responsible for providing leadership, strategic direction and overall operational management of physician services and medical staff administration for the hospital. Works with the CEO to develop strategic plans, policies and address operational issues that build effective relationships between the hospital and its Medical Staff to produce excellence in clinical outcomes effectiveness. Works with the CNO to provide effective multidisciplinary approaches to clinical outcome management and environments of Quality and Safety. Additional responsibilities include establishing and implementing standards and policies to ensure the quality of medical care. Works closely with the operating group CMO and Centura CME to meet Centura system wide strategies, goals, objectives and standards. Serves as a community resource and provides advice and counsel to Centura administrators on Medical and Administration matters related to medical practice and current affairs.

education requirements

  • MD, Board Certified in an approved clinical specialty required while in clinical practice; MBA preferred.

work experience requirements

  • Five years experience with progressive responsibility in healthcare leadership. Medical staff relations, quality measurement credentialing and previous medical management experience highly desirable. Knowledge of JCAHO, managed care and health policy to effectively integrate medical management.


  • Licensed Physician with clinical background (board certified while in clinical practice)

Position duties (essential functions, INCLUDE % OF TIME)

_QUALITY - 35%_

  • Responsible for the management and coordination of the medical staff’s participation and involvement in the quality improvement process, development of quality outcomes measures and the development of pathways, protocols and other clinical processes in collaboration with nursing and the patient care interdisciplinary teams. Responsible for medical staff progress toward “best practice” care delivery across a continuum of care. Ensures appropriate mechanisms are in place to manage quality patient outcomes and utilization of management issues.

  • Sponsors continued refinement and development of the medical staff organization to facilitate improved patient care processes throughout the hospital.

  • In collaboration with Quality Resources Department and other quality improvement staff, assists in the development, implementation and operation of the Quality/Performance Leadership Improvement Reporting model to include:

  1. Consultation to physician selection for and development of the Performance Leadership Group

  2. Guidance and assurance of Interdisciplinary/Leadership Team functioning specifically related to physician involvement in pathways/protocol development and physician-related data generation and usage, leading to “best practice” care.

  3. Leadership to the QPSC

  • Supports the Quality Resource Department in the development of education programs which focus on the identified issues and educational needs evolving from the performance assessment and quality improvement process.

  • In collaboration with the Quality Resource Department and Medical Affairs Office, provides leadership and education to create and maintain a strong mutually beneficial health system/medical staff relationship which responds to the requirements of payers, government, the public and providers.

_SERVICE - 25%_

  • Maintains current knowledge of The Joint Commission, State of Colorado, Centura Health and any other relevant, regulatory or reporting organizations standards on quality indicators and certification processes. Works with the Department of Medical Directors, Chief of Staff and contracted physicians to ensure that appropriate structure, policies and procedures are operational for accreditation and performance excellence. Works collaboratively with senior management, patient care leaders and managers, as well as staff to accomplish goals.

  • Demonstrates working knowledge of medical informatics, applied statistical techniques and analytical tools/processes.

  • Participates in medical staff committees as appropriate and provides expert counsel on clinical quality improvement efforts to committee members and staff.

_COST - 5%_

  • Assists staff in the development of medical staff budgets and other resource allocation related activities.

_PEOPLE - 40%_

  • Works collaboratively with the Chief of Staff and VP of Patient Care to coordinate medical staff quality and peer review issues.

  • Reports on a regular basis to the CEO, operating group CMO/CME and other groups as deemed necessary.

  • Assists in the credentialing and clinical privileging process by establishing an interface with performance information for requested privileges.

  • Assists in physician behaviors process supporting Medical Chief of Staff in government activities.

  • Effectively represents the hospital issues to Centura management and medical staff.

  • Performs similar and incidental duties as assigned.

  • Leadership of Physician Relations activities and personnel including hiring, discipline, firing, evaluations and maintaining appropriate physician information and Medical Library.
