This position work in the ESS WorkstationSupport Services Team (WSST) managing and maintaining aWindows/Mac/Unix environment including infrastructure and desktop systems.This position will provide leadership in the planning and installing of newcomponents, upgrades, maintenance, and security as well as makespurchasing recommendations. It will also provide computer support for CISL,the NCAR Directorate, and NCAR Education and Outreach. This will includeattending seminars, conferences, and meetings to stay current on industrypractices and leading technologies.Responsibilities:Takes lead in administering a heterogeneous Windows/Mac/Linux environmentand potentially delegate tasks according to WSST group needs.Responsibilities include configuration management administration,virtualization administration, and administration of multiple backupenvironments, operating system installations, upgrades,troubleshooting, and installation of software. Initiates and assists inplanning and installation of system configuration tools for all threeenvironments. Manages and maintains hardware, especially clusters andstorage for the WSST computer infrastructure. Develops advanced processes toincrease system functionalities and efficiencies.Collaborates with other Labs on configuration management and other sharedservices. Helps to implement and maintain security practices as guided by theorganization as well as best practices for our field. Produces and maintainsinternal IT procedures as well as ITIL Service Management and other changecontrol principles. Represents the CISL Lab and WSST group in differenthigh-level task forces and collaborative efforts. Provides guidance and helpsdefine direction on system configuration decisions and purchases.Provide help desk support to WSST supported users. Consults with usersregarding problems. Researches and implements advanced solutions to userproblems. Solves subsystem level problems independently or communicates withvendors. Runs diagnostics to isolate problems. Maintains and tracks ticketissues through help desk system.Applies extensive technical expertise to create and maintain documentation ofthe WSST computing environment, primarily for distributing information tothe users of the system and procedures for staff.Maintains extensive awareness of advances and trends in the computingindustry, and recommends improvements to the CISL computing environmentincluding areas of system configuration, hardware, software, andprocedures.
